Two Sets of Monster Encounter Tables

I was playing with the monster determination matrixes from Seven Voyages of Zylarthen and a bit of programming. Here are 2 sets of encounter tables generated for dungeon levels 1 to 6 using the rules of that game. I did leave number encountered off the charts.

I like the level titles but I'd likely list class and level along with them were I to make regular use of them, class an level is a handy shorthand but level titles do have a certain flavor (certainly so when there are different titles for good/neutral guys and the bad guys).

Hmmm... horse on level one of set two, what are they doing there? Escaped horses of the bandits of course, I doubt I'd ever come up with something like that if it wasn't for random determination.

  1. At the risk of commenting again on my own game...

The idea was to include every described monster in the tables. Hence the horses, etc. For "difficulty level" I first looked at some original examples--in the 3 LBB's, the TSR Monster & Treasure Tables, the wandering monster charts from some of the early TSR modules, etc. But in truth the examples are all across the map, from a 1 in 6 chance of meeting Vampires on the 3rd level (!) (The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures, p. 10) to, say, some of the much easier results in Holmes. So I guess I tried to steer a sort of middle path. And to be completely honest, Matt's guidelines in S&W Whitebox and S&W Complete were helpful.

JD is absolutely right to imply that the odd results-Horses, Sea Horses, etc.-should be interpreted as a feature not a bug. I came around to that after thinking about it for a stretch. That's the benefit and the joy of random tables. You're not even trying or intending to be creative. (Sometimes I think my basic creativity is pretty minimal anyway.) Perhaps, you're goal is just to squeeze all the monsters into the listings or whatever. But you end up with something that works.

The real question, though (to refer to a now justifiably deleted "comment") is how you can translate all that into meeting girls... :)

    1. Not that has to do with the deleted comment all that much but gaming is what led to my meeting my 1st wife and while I met my 2nd wife through an online dating site we both had friends in common I knew through gaming.

As for commenting on your own game: why not? I enjoy designers notes and the thinking behind a finished work,

  2. The horses are on level 3 & 4 of the first set of tables too. They're tough buggers (and they get around!).
